Erin Pizzey

Erin Pizzey was born in Tsing Tao, China. As a small child, she was captured by the Japanese in Shanghai, exchanged for Japanese prisoners of war, then was able to leave China on the last boat. Erin travelled extensively as a child in the Middle East and returned to school in England. Erin opened the first refuge for battered women and their children in 1971.

Since then Erin has been a major influence and support for the launch of many other shelters throughout the world. She has written books on domestic violence and has, by Government invitation, lectured throughout America, Europe and New Zealand on this issue. Erin has also contributed to journals and newspapers, including, The New Statesman, ‘Spectator’, Sunday Times, The Observer and Cosmopolitan magazine. In 2006, she will be opening refuges in Bahrain and Russia.

Erin has received various awards for her oustanding work. They include the 'International Order of Volunteers for Peace Diploma of Honour' from Italy, the 'Nancy Astor Award for Journalism' in 1993, the 'Distinguished Leadership Award' from the World Congress of Victimology in San Francisco during 1897 and the 'International Award for Literature' in 1994 from San Valentino Palm d’Oro in Italy.

Erin has made films and documentaries about domestic violence. With one in particular, Scream Quietly or the Neighbours Will Hear, she toured Holland, Belgium and France, and the film which was adapted from her book of the same title was aired twice nationally in Canada and America. Erin has been the resident expert on family violence on the 'Phil Donaghue Show' in America and has given evidence to President Reagan’s Attorney General’s task force on family violence. In 1994 Erin was a guest of honour in Rome at a conference of international court judges. Erin also has a wealth of knowledge on food and wine, which she has developed into an interesting topic.
